THE PLAYER SLIEMA WANDERERS MADE - MICHAEL MIFSUD Every great club has players who explain its place in the game. For Sliema Wanderers, Michael Mifsud is one of the strongest modern examples. Mifsud was a product of the Wanderers and made his Premier League debut in 1997/98. From there, his career moved far beyond Malta. He left Sliema for Kaiserslautern in Germany, later played for Lillestrøm in Norway, joined Coventry City in England, and became one of Malta’s defining international footballers. That makes him three stories in one. He is a candidate for Sliema’s greatest modern player. He is arguably the club’s best-known football export. And he is the clearest example from our research so far of a Sliema youth product who went furthest in the game. His international record gives the story extra weight. Mifsud captained Malta and scored 42 goals in 143 appearances, making him one of the country’s most recognisable football figures. There will always be debate around Sliema’s greatest ever player. Older generations may point to earlier club legends, and there will always be space on Spectata for those arguments. But as a modern pathway story, Mifsud is difficult to ignore: Sliema Wanderers gave him his start, and he carried that beginning into a career that reached Germany, Norway, England, and the Malta national team. Michael Mifsud went on to return to Malta in the twilight of his career, including 2 more spells at Sliema Wanderers and finishing with a career record of 202 goals in 540 professional club games, including 73 goals in 124 games for Sliema Wanderers.
